Green Deal
The European Green Deal is a strategy introduced by the European Commission in 2019. Its goals, written in law by the European Climate Law in 2021, are to make the European economy and society climate-neutral by 2050, and to target reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
While climate action is a central pillar, the Green Deal also focuses on broader environmental, economic and social objectives, such as the promotion of circular economy, the preservation of biodiversity, the sustainability of agricultural and food systems, the improvement of air, water and soil quality, the promotion of social and economic fairness, the reduction of dependency on natural resources and the promotion of sustainable transportation.
To support these objectives, the Green Deal involves legislative, financial and social measures. Thus, the legislative framework includes the European Climate Law and the Circular Economy Action Plan.
